The DLD hives have built-in open mesh floors (OMF). OMFs have been shown to help colonies keep healthy and free of disease. The picture shows a couple of weeks worth of debris that has fallen through the hive floor. In a tradtional (non-OMF) hive the bees would need to 'sweep' all of this rubbish out their home themselves.
